Vasectomy Post-Operation Instruction
- Post vasectomy pain varies unpredictably from usually having little pain to none but very rarely can be significant pain and swelling.
- Pain can start from 1 hour after the operation when the local anesthetic wears off at the site of the operation. This can be reduced by simple pain-relieving medication such as panadol or panadeine after a food.
- Wear a jockstrap or restricting underwear during the first weeks to support your scrotum.
- It is wise to rest and avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for one week. Your level of activity including sex should be followed by your degree of comfort. This can prevent bruising and bleeding from occurring.
- Shower as normal, no bath 24 hours after the surgery. It is important to keep the area dry, so pat dry with a clean towel after showering, or use blow-dry. This dressing will peel away in 2-3 days time like sunburnt skin.
- You will need to have a sperm count done 3 months after your operation to check that your sperm count is zero. You will be given a container labeled with your name and date of birth, which is for your specimen. Please use this container only. Please bring the specimen with the signed supplied form, time of collection, and day or to take to pathology collection center close to you. The cost of the test is bulk billed by our pathology service provider. Your results will be available 36 hours later. Please phone us on three days later for the result. this will either confirm that you are ‘all clear’ or need further testing.
- You are not sterile yet! Sterility takes approximately 8-12 Weeks after a vasectomy to occur. At 12 Weeks most are all clear, only rarely are repeated monthly tests needed. Your operation cannot be considered successful until you have confirmed with us that you are all clear.
- If you have any other concerns, please make an appointment to see the Doctor.
