Circumcision Post-Operation Instruction
For Infant and Toddler
- our baby will receive 2 doses of infant acetaminophen (Tylenol) drops, or baby panadol. Dosage amount is 1.25 ml first line on the dropper or as per instructed on the labe.
- Do not bathe your baby for the first 24 hours after the circumcision. Sponge baths are allowed.
- For babies about one week after the procedure, you will need to apply a drop of betadine in the tip of the penis and smear vaseline in front of the nappy each nappy change to prevent vet scab sticking to the nappy.
- Healing is promoted by keeping the area clean and dry. Warm water and a soft cloth are preferred for cleaning the area around the penis. Avoid pre-moistened baby wipes, alcohol, powders, and lotions as they may cause irritation.
- The ring will separate of its own accord. That usually takes between 3-7 days, although it can come off sooner, or it can hold on longer.
- Please contact the clinic if the ring is retained the ring does not come in 7 days.
- Avoid unnecessary travel, as car seats can be irritating to the newly circumcised baby, and can delay healing.

FOR ADULTS:
-
- When the local anaesthetic wears off there may be some pain at the site of the operation. This can be reduced by simple pain-relieving medication such as Panadol, no aspirin, ibuprofen, motrin and advil after surgery since it thins your blood and promotes bleeding
- The local anesthetic and surgery may cause the penis to become swollen and bruised which will gradually reduce over a two-week span.
- For 3 or 4 days after your operation, it’s likely you’ll experience some discomfort and swelling around the head of your penis.
- You should avoid having sex for at least 4 weeks after your operation.
- Applying petroleum jelly (Vaseline) around the tip of your penis will stop it sticking to your underwear.
- It may be more comfortable to wear boxer briefs, as they hold the penis in place and reduce friction and irritation. It is also helpful to orient the penis upward to help lymphatic drainage and reduce swelling.
