Post Operation Instruction

  • For about one (1) week after the procedure, you will need to smear Vaseline in front of nappy after applying Betadine in tip of penis at each nappy change.

  • The ring will separate of its own accord. That usually takes between 3-7 days, although it can come off sooner, or it can hold on longer. (It doesn’t matter how long it takes, you simply continue applying the Iodine for a day or two after the ring comes off).
  • Delayed or incomplete separation of the ring occurs in some cases, and can result in proximal slippage of the ring with penile shaft or glans herniation. Please contact Dr Athari if the ring does not come in 7 days.

  • Expect your son to be a little irritable for about a day or so.

  • Most babies like to nurse in a quiet environment following the circumcision. Babies who cry for more than a few minutes are usually suffering from air swallowed during the procedure and need to be burped.

  • Most babies sleep quite well following the circumcision. The best sleeping position for your baby is on his side, supported by a blanket roll.

  • Healing is promoted by keeping the area clean and dry. Warm water and a soft cloth are preferred for cleaning the area around the penis. Avoid pre-moistened baby wipes, alcohol, powders, and lotions as they may cause irritation.

  • Avoid unnecessary travel, as car seats can be irritating to the newly circumcised baby, and can delay healing. In Adult it is wise to rest and avoid strenuous exercise for a few days.

  • Do not bathe your baby for the first 3 days after the circumcision. Sponge baths are allowed.

  • For Adults when the local anaesthetic wears off there may be some pain at the site of the operation. This can be reduced by simple pain relieving medication such as PANADOL (no more than 2 every 4 hours).

  • There may be some oozing, which is common, but if bleeding occurs, call the clinic on 9748 9777 or Doctor or take to the nearest Hospital.

  • In Adults, there may be EXCESSIVE swelling of the penis for up to 2 weeks. There is a small chance of infection after surgery. If the area stays inflamed and the inflammation spreads or becomes tender to touch please contact the clinic.

  • Please contact  Dr Athari at any time with concerns.
